Is there such a thing as a Sales Champion? Why not? If there is such a thing, then how do you become a sales champion or how do you just become a good sales person?
Some people are born with the skills of being good at talking and selling, but like other skills, it can be learnt. Even if you are not a natural sales person you are able to mold your mind and talents and learn how to be good at selling from using different sales techniques.
Here are a few things which will help you get started:
Assess your Sales Skills
Start out by taking an inventory of what your current sales skills and knowledge are in. Compare your abilities to the list of basic sales skills that every sales person should have or learn to acquire. This will help you to choose the best industry for you to go into.
Evaluate yourself first
You should take a moment and evaluate your habits and behaviour during and after working hours. Do you jump at the chance to help assist customers and your boss or do you wait until you are asked for help? Do you constantly strive to find things to do and to learn something new or do you just go about doing this and that during your day until it's time to go home? If both your answers are the latter of these two then you might consider changing career because to be a good sales person, you need to be on your toes and willing to talk and assist people.
Choose an industry that fits you
Do a bit of research on yourself and see what type of sales person you are and what industry you should place yourself in. What type of product do you want to sell or are comfortable in selling? would it be selling advertising, cars, IT equipment, financial services or any others you can think of? Just remember, the more you are interested (or passionate) about that product or service, the easier it will be in selling it.
Present yourself well
As a sales person, image can be a major factor in making a sale. Have you ever seen a scruffy looking sales person, or even better, have you ever brought anything from a scruffy looking sales person? People will be more inclined to open up and talk to a well dressed person than someone who is not. Dress yourself well and keep those shoes polished.
Study others
To help improve your sales skills, study other people in sales and see how they start and close a sale. You should especially know what your competition are doing. Write out a list and see how you and your company fairs against your competition and see if there is anything you can learn from it.
Get a Coach
Find someone in your organisation or someone who has been a successful sales person and ask them to coach you on perfecting your sales skills. Read many books, listen to audio, watch videos and attend trainning courses/seminars on how to build your sales skills. Learn how to ask the right questions, how to listen and answer the right answers and how to make a great presentaton.
Educate yourself
Being a good sales person doesn't mean you just have to be a good talker, good listener and good presenter. You also need to know the ins and outs of the product of service you are selling. Before going into a sales pitch, you should study the product or service that you are going to sell and should be able to answer ever question the customer might ask you plus more!
Practice your skills
Like any skill, you need to practice and practice to improve. Even if you're a naturally gifted sales person, there is always room for improvement. Be ready and teachable at all times!
